Modern Farmhouse Decor

Today's sought-after "modern farmhouse" style is a little less about primitives and a little more about combining approachable styles for a clean yet rustic look. Popularized by Joanna Gaines of HGTV's Fixer Upper, this melange of industrial, sleek, and weathered is everywhere right now and easy to create in any home.

The most common finishes in a modern farmhouse are "iron" or black for hardware, window frames or light fixtures; subway tiles for backsplashes and bathrooms alike; and for wall coverings, white shiplap.

When I create a design board for a room in this style, I keep in mind black, white, "wood," and greenery. This will be the foundation for your décor, which can be "popped" with accents of leather, galvanized metal, recycled glass and glazed jugs and vases.

When selecting furniture, it's always safe to go with a traditional rustic trestle (or farm) table. Made of recycled pine, the table pictured above extends from 96" to 132." The refurbished barnwood table pictured below was made by a local artist who will create custom pieces including cabinets, chests, beds and more. (If we can sketch it, he can make it!) Mix things up with a modernized black windsor chair for style contrast! Check out our custom "mix and match" options in store, where you can design your own table and chairs, and we'll order it for you.

The pendant light fixture below features a distressed railroad tie, dark bronze metal accents, and antique style bulbs. Complete your farmhouse look with accents including antique books, neutral ceramic pots, and vases filled with small plants or greenery.
